45 Units of S13-3150kVA/35kV Transformers for a 400MW Offshore Wind Farm in the UK

Project Overview

HBTP supplied 45 units of S13-3150/35 transformers for a 400MW offshore wind farm in the North Sea, United Kingdom. The project represents a significant deployment in the offshore wind energy sector, requiring transformers engineered for reliable operation under demanding conditions.

Project Background

The UK is the world leader in offshore wind energy, with over 10GW of installed capacity. This 400MW project in the North Sea features 60 turbines located 30km offshore. Each turbine's 690V output is stepped up to 35kV by transformers housed inside the turbine foundations, then collected via subsea cables to an offshore substation.

Customer Requirements

Offshore conditions demanded marine-grade corrosion protection (C5-M), IP56 ingress protection, vibration resistance for turbine foundation mounting, and compact design to fit within the confined space of monopile foundations. S13 efficiency was required to minimize energy losses across the 25-year project lifespan.

Our Solution

HBTP supplied its S13-series transformers, engineered specifically for offshore wind energy applications. The high-quality CRGO silicon steel core with step-lap mitered joints minimizes no-load losses, while copper windings provide enhanced short-circuit withstand capability and long service life.

Quality & Testing

All units passed salt spray corrosion testing (1000 hours), vibration testing simulating offshore turbine conditions, and full electrical type tests including lightning impulse (LI 200kV) and partial discharge measurements. Special offshore sealing systems were verified for water ingress resistance.

Delivery & Installation

The 45 units were delivered in three batches over 18 weeks to the port of Hull, then transferred to offshore installation vessels. HBTP provided technical documentation in compliance with UK offshore regulations and supported commissioning from the offshore substation.

Project Outcomes

All 45 transformers were successfully energized and are operating at rated capacity. The project was completed on schedule, and the customer has reported excellent performance with no unplanned outages attributed to transformer equipment. HBTP's reliable power distribution solution has contributed to the project's overall success and operational efficiency.
