35 Units of S11-2500kVA/33kV Transformers for a Natural Gas Processing Plant in Qatar
Project Overview
HBTP supplied 35 units of S11-2500/33 transformers for a natural gas liquids (NGL) extraction and processing facility in Ras Laffan, Qatar. The project represents a significant deployment in the natural gas processing sector, requiring transformers engineered for reliable operation under demanding conditions.
Project Background
Qatar is the world's largest exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG). The Ras Laffan industrial city hosts multiple gas processing facilities. This NGL extraction plant processes natural gas to separate ethane, propane, butane, and condensate, requiring reliable power distribution in hazardous area classifications.
Customer Requirements
33kV/11kV distribution transformers for hazardous area (Zone 2) installation, 2500kVA capacity, 50°C ambient rating, gas-tight sealed construction to prevent flammable gas ingress, and compliance with IECEx and Qatar Petroleum standards.
Our Solution
HBTP supplied its S11-series transformers, engineered specifically for natural gas processing applications. The high-quality CRGO silicon steel core with step-lap mitered joints minimizes no-load losses, while copper windings provide enhanced short-circuit withstand capability and long service life.

Quality & Testing
All units passed hazardous area certification tests including gas-tightness verification and surface temperature measurement under full load. Standard electrical tests plus extended high-temperature testing at 50°C ambient were performed.
Delivery & Installation
Equipment was delivered to Hamad Port and transported to Ras Laffan. HBTP provided installation supervision in coordination with the plant's safety team, ensuring all work complied with hazardous area procedures.
Project Outcomes
All 35 transformers were successfully energized and are operating at rated capacity. The project was completed on schedule, and the customer has reported excellent performance with no unplanned outages attributed to transformer equipment. HBTP's reliable power distribution solution has contributed to the project's overall success and operational efficiency.
