22 Transformers + 8 Pad-Mounted Substations for a Copper Mine in Chile
Project Overview
HBTP supplied 22 + 8 substations units of S11-1600/10 transformers for a copper mining operation producing 200,000 tons of concentrate annually in the Atacama Desert, Chile. The project represents a significant deployment in the copper mining sector, requiring transformers engineered for reliable operation under demanding conditions.
Project Background
Chile is the world's largest copper producer, and mining operations require robust power infrastructure in remote, harsh environments. This mine operates at an altitude of 3,500 meters in the Atacama Desert with extreme temperature variations, high UV exposure, and limited road access.
Customer Requirements
1600kVA capacity, 10kV/0.4kV ratio, S11 efficiency, altitude derating to 3,500m, -20°C to +40°C operating range, UV-resistant exterior paint, and pad-mounted substations with MV switchgear integrated for remote site security.
Our Solution
HBTP supplied its S11-series transformers, engineered specifically for copper mining applications. The high-quality CRGO silicon steel core with step-lap mitered joints minimizes no-load losses, while copper windings provide enhanced short-circuit withstand capability and long service life.
| Parameter | Specification |

Quality & Testing
All units passed high-voltage tests with altitude correction factors applied. The pad-mounted substations underwent type tests for IP54 enclosure integrity and internal arc classification (IAC). UV resistance of exterior coatings was verified by accelerated weathering tests.
Delivery & Installation
Equipment was shipped to Antofagasta port, then transported 400km by road over rough mining terrain to the mine site. HBTP engineers supervised installation and provided operator training for the mine's maintenance crew.
Project Outcomes
All 22 + 8 substations transformers were successfully energized and are operating at rated capacity. The project was completed on schedule, and the customer has reported excellent performance with no unplanned outages attributed to transformer equipment. HBTP's reliable power distribution solution has contributed to the project's overall success and operational efficiency.
