16 Units of SCB12-1000kVA Dry-Type Transformers for a Lithium Operation in Chile
Project Overview
HBTP supplied 16 units of SCB12-1000/10 transformers for a lithium carbonate production facility from brine evaporation in the Atacama Salt Flat, Chile. The project represents a significant deployment in the lithium brine extraction sector, requiring transformers engineered for reliable operation under demanding conditions.
Project Background
The Atacama Salt Flat in Chile contains the world's largest lithium reserves. This operation extracts lithium-rich brine from beneath the salt flat, evaporates it in large ponds, and processes it into battery-grade lithium carbonate. The environmentally sensitive salt flat requires dry-type transformers to eliminate oil spill risk.
Customer Requirements
Dry-type transformers to eliminate oil contamination risk in the environmentally sensitive salt flat, 1000kVA capacity, 10kV/0.4kV ratio, SCB12 efficiency, corrosion resistance for salt-rich environment, and altitude derating for 2,300m elevation.
Our Solution
HBTP supplied its SCB12-series transformers, engineered specifically for lithium brine extraction applications. The high-quality CRGO silicon steel core with step-lap mitered joints minimizes no-load losses, while copper windings provide enhanced short-circuit withstand capability and long service life.

Quality & Testing
All dry-type units passed salt atmosphere corrosion testing and high-altitude electrical tests with derating factors applied. Standard tests per IEC 60076-11 included temperature rise, impulse, and partial discharge measurements.
Delivery & Installation
Equipment was transported to the remote salt flat location via specialized desert logistics. HBTP provided on-site commissioning and training, emphasizing the environmental protection benefits of dry-type technology.
Project Outcomes
All 16 transformers were successfully energized and are operating at rated capacity. The project was completed on schedule, and the customer has reported excellent performance with no unplanned outages attributed to transformer equipment. HBTP's reliable power distribution solution has contributed to the project's overall success and operational efficiency.
